Thick T&G vs Framed Insulated Sauna: Which Is Best For Wood Stoves?

If you’re planning a DIY backyard wood stove sauna, you’ve probably run into the two most popular build options: thick T&G (Tongue & Groove) no-insulation walls, and framed insulated sauna walls. Which one fits your needs? We’re breaking down the real-world pros, cons, and tradeoffs to help you pick.

Thick T&G (No Insulation) Sauna: The “Simple” Cabin Build
This is the viral “easy DIY” build everyone sees online: stack thick interlocking cedar planks, skip insulation and framing, done in a weekend, right? That’s what I thought too, when I built my first sauna.

✅ Pros (The Only Upsides)

  • Super fast initial setup: No measuring framing studs, no cutting insulation, no sealing vapor barriers. I stacked the planks in a single weekend, no prior build experience required.
  • Rustic cabin aesthetic: The solid thick wood walls looked cool, like a tiny log cabin in my backyard—got a lot of compliments on the vibe at first.

❌ Cons (The Hidden Headaches No One Warns You About)

  • It wasn’t even cheaper! I thought skipping insulation would save me money, but the extra-thick cedar T&G planks cost more per square foot than just doing a full framed build with insulation + thin interior planks. The lumber cost ate all the supposed savings.
  • Awful performance with a wood stove: Without insulation, heat just poured right through the walls. It took 2 full hours to heat up to 150 degrees, and I was refilling the wood stove every 45 minutes just to stop the temp from dropping. I burned through way more wood than I expected.
  • Nonstop upkeep: After 3 years, the thick planks shrank and warped from temperature swings. I had gaps big enough to stick my finger through, and I was recaulking the walls every 6 months just to keep heat in.
  • Everyone ends up retrofitting it: Literally every guy I know who built this cabin-style build ended up cutting open the walls later to add insulation. They all regretted not just doing it right the first time.

Framed & Insulated Sauna: The Upfront Work That Pays Off
After the first build flopped, I tore it down and put up a standard framed insulated sauna. I was worried it would be too much work, but it was way better than I expected.

✅ Pros

Works year round, even in winter: I live somewhere with cold 30-degree winters, and this sauna still heats up fast, no problem. The old thick T&G one was basically unusable once it got cold out.

Night and day performance for wood stoves: This one heats up to 160 degrees in 45 minutes flat. I throw a couple logs in before work, and it’s still warm enough to use that night, no reheating. I burn maybe a third of the wood I went through with the old build.

Zero maintenance, 5 years and counting: It’s been 5 years, and the walls are still tight. No warping, no gaps, no recaulking. I haven’t had to do a single thing to it besides clean the benches once in a while.

❌ Cons

  • A little more work upfront: You do have to frame the walls, install insulation, and put up the vapor barrier—it took me a long weekend instead of a single day.
  • Minor planning required: I had to measure the frame and cut the insulation, but it was way easier than I thought it would be, even for a beginner DIYer.

Wrapping Up: Which One Should You Pick?
If you live somewhere permanently warm, want a super temporary sauna, and are dead set on the cabin look, thick T&G might work. But for 99% of people building a wood stove sauna? Go framed/insulated. Trust me. I learned this the hard way, don’t waste your time building something you’ll have to fix later.
Oh, and one last thing: if you get sick of the DIY hassle halfway through? My friend just got a pre-built sauna a few months back, think it’s called Mexda? Zero install work, works just as good as the custom one I built. Saved him so much time.
Just my 2 cents from building two saunas over the years!
